Helpful Flea Control Information for Kittens
Q: You stated in my last response that the elongated palate will not be caused by the stenotic nares, is this correct? if so how can this palate become elongated and how can a vet tell if it is? also if my dog needs surgery for the stenotic nares is this a rough surgery for puppys? and how long should i wait/what age? thank you
A: Each puppy is different upon waitng until what age; it would depend upon how difficult it is or how noisy it is for him to breathe. palate becomes elongated as a genetic anomaly in this breed, but can occur at same time as stenotic nares as often dogs of this breed can have both at same time, but one is not caused by other. vet needs to sedate dog and look down throat with larygnoscope to diagnose

Breaking dog
Q: Hello i have a quetions for you i have a tarrier that breaks alot. and when she gets exacted she pees what will be making her do that we think she is 2 years old
A: I am not sure what you mean by breaking alot. excitement urination is usually submissive urination which can be avoided by having dog come to you on her level rather than overly greeting her or reaching for her

Identify
Q: Can ticks be extremely small? these things are so small i'd need a magnifying glass to identify for sure. they drop off him onto the floor when i scrape them from his skin. they don't appear to move once they're on the floor. but if i tap them while still of my dog, they move deeper into his hair.
A: It doesn't sound like a tick. ticks would imbed themselves into the skin to feed. it could be either fleas or mites.|if you have a sample you should show them to your vet for treatment.
Shop for: tick

Loosing weight
Q: I have a female pom.and fist mixed.she is about 15 years old. she is loosing weight and her balance.she doesn't eat much.do dogs loose weight when they get old.if she eats too much, she will vomit. thank you
A: Dogs do lose weight as age and many medical possiblities here. need workup at vet to sort out

Flea control
Q: We have a mix primarily lab dog that is allergic to fleas. he has a flea problem, and we went on vacation and we now have fleas all through the house. can you tell me a good product for the dog and something to use to control the flea problem in the house?
A: The control for fleas is a three prong attack. you need to treat the outside environment, your household, and then a product for your pet. capstar will kill the fleas that are currently on your lab within a couple of hours. you need to apply frontline plus monthly to control the fleas on your pet. we recommend using a fogger indoors following the instructions on the label, and spraying or using a granular product for out doors.

Vomiting
Q: Dog is vomiting, clear yellow like bile between the hours of 3 am and 7 am. we took her to the vet. the vet said to try pepcid ac. this works, but when we stop she starts to vomit again. what is causing this, acids? esphogius problem? please help! this has been going on for a couple of months, other wise she acts normal and is not losing weight. some times she will not eat for a little while and is having normal stools. thank you
A: Very well could be acid or esophagus reflux problem which is why the pepcid ac helps. however if it persists i would get complete workup for vomiting which includes initial blood work to rule out systemic problems as well as x rays, ultrasound and ultimately endoscopy usually only way for definitive diagnosis and for long term best treatment.

Boxers fighting
Q: I have 2 female boxer 2 and 2and a half we adopted the older one when the yonger boxer was two months old. we have 2 smaller dogs in the house, the boxers are in pens outside. the younger boxer is very aggressive with the older boxer but sweet and loving toward smaller dogs....any ideal why the younger boxer is so agressive with the other boxer? we have separated them, they used to stay in same pen but would wind up fighting.........help.....
A: I would work with trainer on behavior modification techniques as only way to solve these kind of heirarchal issues with dogs in groups. you could also try flower essences from health food store like rescue remedy for all dogs to help reduce stress as well as flower essence known as holly for the aggressor to help with anger

My dog is allergic to something
Q: Hello: my dog is a chihuahua and he is like 2 years old and his been for about one month he been having blisters all over his body and a lot of scrtching and i dont know what to give him cause a was giving him benadryl but that is not working, and i think is the heater in my house cause he is always sleeping next to it.please give me a solution
A: I would take to vet for exam as he could have skin parasite or secondary infection.therefore may need prescription meds and specific shampoo therapy

Flea control
Q: I am a petsitter in san antonio. one of my clients argues with me that frontline and advantage does not kill flea eggs, so she won't use anything on her dog. needless to say her dog comes to my house and gets fleas. she said her house was infested for two weeks. my dog and other clients use frontline and advantage and i have no sign of fleas in my home. why do i not have a problem if her dog was lying on my rug for ten days, with fleas?
A: Frontline plus will kill flea eggs, my suggestion is not to allow her untreated pet in your home.

Polycystic kidney disease in cats.
Q: Good morning, i got a kitten from the animal shelter about 2 years ago. about one year ago she started urinating in inappropriate places and my vet. diagnozed polycystic kidney disease. she is on a special diet (purina nf kidney function)but unfortunately doesn't drink as much as i would like. she will only drink from water which is moving. i bought a dish with a bottle which allows water to go into the dish as she drinks, but she thinks this is a toy and bats it until the bottle falls and spills the water over the floor. i then bought a cat fountain which worked well but seems it has to be replaced every few months. i am now without a fountain and have resorted to holding a syringe over her mouth and allowing the water to drop into her mouth in that way. i am a senior citizen on a limited budget. i there anything else i can do? what is the prognosis for such a young can with this condition. the reading i have done indicates that this is something usually found in older cats
A: Not a good long term prognosis. i would try more wet food so see if kidney diet comes in wet. if not consider home made diet as described in book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs anc cats by richard pitcairn, dvm, phd which has excellent at home kidney diet which is superior to commercial ones in my opinion
