Topical for dogs used on cat
Q: A topical flea treatment for dogs was used on my persian cat. i called poison control and they advised bathing her. i did and read the back of the box and it says not to use in conjuction with other products or within a time period of about one month. she is really infested, what should i do? by the way...she is fine now. also, can i order the pills for treatment without a prescription? thank you!
A: You need prescription for oral capstar or prggram for fleas. also consider bathing in avon skin so soft by diluting 1.5 ounces in 1 gallon of water and applying it as leave on rinse. greasy but effective for fleas
Shop for: capstar

Unusual cat behavior
Q: My 11 month old male cat keeps rubbing his butt across my carpet. he does this all the time, like when he gets out of the litter box, first wakes up from nap, ect. i have tried everything to get him to quit since sometimes feces is left on the carpet. i just gave him worm medicine about a month ago. what is wrong with him and how do i get him to quit.
A: You need to have anal glands checked out at vet as even though more common in dogs, still get impacted in cats on occasion

Unwanted pregnacies
Q: Isn't there an age limit to when dogs can become pregnant because mine is only a year old
A: Once first heat usually roughly around this age, they can get pregnant

Flea control
Q: We have a mix primarily lab dog that is allergic to fleas. he has a flea problem, and we went on vacation and we now have fleas all through the house. can you tell me a good product for the dog and something to use to control the flea problem in the house?
A: The control for fleas is a three prong attack. you need to treat the outside environment, your household, and then a product for your pet. capstar will kill the fleas that are currently on your lab within a couple of hours. you need to apply frontline plus monthly to control the fleas on your pet. we recommend using a fogger indoors following the instructions on the label, and spraying or using a granular product for out doors.
Shop for: capstar, frontline plus, frontline

Heartguard usage in collies
Q: I have two collies @ home & i understand the importance of using a heartworm prevenative for them, but i also know that in small instances collies can have adverse reactions to ivermectin witch is used in heartguard plus. if i buy heartguard through petmeds and if one them has any problems due to the product itself will the manufatuer still back up its claim to pay for all veterinary bills to treat my animal even if i don't buy the product from my veterinarian? thank you for your quick reply erica
A: I cannot speak for manufacturer but the dose of ivermectin used in heartguard is usually safe and below toxic range in dogs even in this breed

Dog vomiting after hydroxyzine use
Q: Is vomiting a common withdrawal symptom of hydroxyzine withdrawal? my 3 year old westie has been taking 15mg of hydroxyzine twice a day for the past 30 days. this is his second round of treatment. after both rounds, before i could refill the prescription, he started vomiting a couple of days after his last dose. i brought him to the vet the first time but they didn't think much of it. they had me give him pepcid and wait until the vomiting subsided to start the hydroxyzine again. it seems coincidental that the same thing is happening again after the second round.
A: The only source i could find spoke of withdrawal symptoms in newborn human babies whose mothers had been taking hydroxyzine prior to their birth.

Itching after taking sentinal
Q: After giving my dog a sentinal tablet yesterday from the vet, he started itching profusely. it eventually stopped, but i am wondering if it's an allergic reaction or once given to the dog, do the fleas become very active and try to leave the host? also, he was given his initial puppy shots yesterday. could this have something to do with the itching? we've had him a week and he's never itched this badly until yesterday. he is an australian shepherd.
A: Sometimes if pups are given too many things on one day, like vaccines, wormings or heartworm meds this increases chance of any types of reactions. in future separate these things out by at least a week especially in this breed and you lessen likelihood of reactions

My lhasa apso
Q: My dog is 6 months old and is scratching herself to death. she also bites the area. i'm pretty sure it's an allergy but i don't know what she is allergic too. she also sneezes when i spray perfume on myself or use cleaning products of air freshner. help
A: You can use benadryl (diphenhydramine) giving it up to 3 times a day if needed. you could also use relief shampoo to help control the itch. if the problem persists you should check with the veterinarian to find the cause.
